Pieter Vanhuysse obtained a Master in economics at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and an MSc in politics as well as a PhD in political economy at the London School of Economics, England. Pieter has been a Junior Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study at Collegium Budapest, Hungary, a Lecturer at the Institute of International Sociology of Gorizia, Italy, a VATAT Research Fellow of the Higher Education Committee of the State of Israel, and a Research Affiliate at the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research in Vienna (affiliated to the United Nations).

Pieter's research focuses on comparative political sociology and comparative political economy, as applied to education, human capital, pensions, and other public policies in ageing OECD democracies. Pieter's research has been published in journals such as Public Choice, J. Social Policy, the J. Public Policy, the J. European Public Policy, Political Studies, Politics, the Int.J. of Social Welfare, the Int.J. of Sociology and Social Policy, the East European Quarterly, Czech Sociological Review, Europe-Asia Studies, the British Educational Research J., Education Review, Critical Studies in Education, Social Psychology of Education, and Int. Studies in Sociology of Education.

Divide and Pacify
, Pieter’s book on Central European transitions to democracy, has been nominated for The American Sociological Association's Award for Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship, Section on Political Sociology, for 2006.
